BlockBeats News, June 11th, OpenAI announced its acquisition of Ona, integrating its secure cloud execution and orchestration technology into the Codex ecosystem. OpenAI stated that this acquisition will expand Codex to provide secure, customer-controllable cloud infrastructure for long-running agents in software and knowledge work. Currently, over 5 million people use Codex weekly for research, analysis, building, and automation, a 400% increase from earlier this year. As Codex's capabilities grow, its most valuable work is shifting from minutes to hours or days.
OpenAI mentioned that Ona's technology offers a secure, persistent environment where agents can access necessary tools, systems, and context and progress tasks over time. By introducing Ona, OpenAI aims to transition Codex from a model that relies on a single device or active session to one that can run continuously in a customer's cloud environment. Ona has helped 2 million developers work in a secure, reproducible cloud environment. OpenAI stated that this experience will support Codex's next stage of development, enabling agents to continue running in the customer's cloud environment even after the laptop is closed.
The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including obtaining necessary regulatory approvals. Until the transaction is completed, OpenAI and Ona will continue to operate as independent companies. After the completion of the transaction, the Ona team will join OpenAI to collaborate with the Codex team on advancing secure, persistent enterprise execution capabilities.
