After Half-Year Absence, Distributed Systems Expert Lin Haibin Returns to ByteDance to Join Seed Team

According to Dynamic Beating monitoring, Lin Haibin, the former ByteDance large-scale model training lead, has officially returned to the Seed team to continue overseeing the development of the distributed training infrastructure. Lin Haibin, who left in December last year to join SSI (Safe Superintelligence), the superintelligence company founded by former OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, has returned in less than six months. Lin Haibin, a master's graduate from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and an AI expert mentored by renowned database expert Professor Andy Pavlo, previously led the open-source reinforcement learning training framework veRL and the multi-cardlevel distributed training system MegaScale. His swift return reflects the shifting trend of top AI talent between China and the U.S.

Prior to joining ByteDance's AML (Applied Machine Learning) team in 2020, Lin Haibin was involved in MXNet framework development at Amazon AWS. During his time at ByteDance, Lin Haibin led the development of the GPU recommendation training system and the collective communication library ByteCCL, and led the team to solve the challenge of coordination among tens of thousands of GPUs to refine the MegaScale training system. With the current high daily invocation volume of the large models, the stability requirements for the training cluster for multimodal and intelligent agent development are extremely high. Lin Haibin's previous familiarity with ByteDance's entire technical system can directly support the iteration of the underlying distributed training system. In addition, the open-source reinforcement learning training framework veRL led by Lin Haibin has been adopted by Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen and Shanghai AI Lab.

ByteDance's employee return policy stipulates that an employee who has resigned for at least 3 months and has no violations on record can apply to return to the company, and if the resignation was less than 1 year ago, the job level and salary remain unchanged. Lin Haibin's return to ByteDance echoes the recent incentives for the core team of large models. ByteDance has opened up to Seed department employees the opportunity to subscribe to "Douyin Stock" special options at a price of $13 per share. The current talent war for large models has escalated into a comprehensive competition of "options + autonomy + computing power." Previously, about 70 members of the Seed Lab had moved to external large model manufacturers, and ByteDance is attempting to reverse this staff exodus through special equity design.
