According to DynaBeat monitoring, Musk announced on X that the xAI project plans to open source the operational Grok 4.2 base model (with 0.5T parameters) by the end of 2026. Although the model has a relatively small parameter size, Musk emphasized that the open-source version still holds great practical value for the developer community.
Previously, Musk openly acknowledged that due to deficiencies in training data quality, comprehensiveness, and formula ratios, the underlying model running Grok 4.2 struggled with high-level programming challenges. However, for routine natural language processing and basic inference tasks, the base model with 500 billion parameters still maintains a strong performance advantage.
Open-sourcing large models is one of xAI's strategies. In March 2024, xAI open-sourced the Grok-1 model with 314 billion parameters, which was then the largest-scale open-source model.
