BlockBeats News, May 20th: The Samsung Electronics South Korean labor union announced the postponement of the planned strike scheduled for tomorrow. The union will vote on the salary proposal. Earlier on the 18th, a South Korean court partially approved Samsung Electronics' request for an injunction against the union's planned strike. If the Samsung union fails to comply with the court order and continues the strike, it will face daily fines of approximately 100 million South Korean won.
The Samsung Electronics union had originally planned to start an 18-day general strike from May 21st. The core reason is to seek more profit-sharing in 2026 when the company's AI semiconductor business is expected to achieve historically high profits. The union demands the removal of the performance bonus cap, allocating 15% of the company's operating profit as the source of performance bonuses and institutionalizing and making it transparent. They also seek a 7% increase in basic wages to narrow the wage gap with their competitor, SK Hynix. The Samsung management, on the other hand, is only willing to offer a one-time special bonus or a limited 10% profit-sharing plan, refusing to permanently alter the system due to concerns about increasing long-term operating costs, impacting competitiveness, and shareholder interests.
