BlockBeats News, May 12th: Sam Altman is expected to testify in federal court in Oakland, California on Tuesday local time regarding the lawsuit filed by Elon Musk against OpenAI. According to the lawyers' statements during Monday's hearing, Altman will testify after OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor.
Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman, and CEO Greg Brockman in 2024, accusing the company of violating its initial "non-profit" and "public welfare mission" commitments, alleging that his previous donation of about $38 million to OpenAI was used for unauthorized commercial purposes.
Taylor emphasized the functions of the OpenAI board and the company's governance structure following a reorganization during Monday's hearing. He stated that in 2023, when Altman was briefly removed as CEO, the company faced a situation of "potential collapse."
Taylor also mentioned that after a capital restructuring last year, the company's structure became clearer, but the non-profit entity still retains control. Additionally, some investors, including SoftBank and Thrive Capital, tied investment conditions to the company's structural adjustments.
On the other hand, Satya Nadella also testified on Monday. Nadella stated that Musk never raised concerns with him about Microsoft's investment in OpenAI breaching any special agreements, and he said that Microsoft chose to invest in OpenAI "when no one else would bet," which he is "extremely proud" of.
Nadella also commented on the 2023 OpenAI board controversy, saying, "It seemed like an amateur hour to me."
