Powell Makes Final Stand in Era of ‘Plain English’

BlockBeats News, April 27th, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will hold his final scheduled press conference as chair on Wednesday, April 27th. This may mark the end of his period of regular press Q&A sessions as the top Fed official. Investors and economic observers are closely watching such press conferences. Advocates for regular Fed chair appearances in front of the media argue that this allows the central bank to shape the narrative around its rate decisions and helps the market digest Fed policy. However, some critics, including Trump-nominated Fed Chair successor pick Kevin Warsh, believe the Fed officials are overcommunicating. Warsh is likely to be confirmed before the Fed's next policy meeting in mid-June and has hinted that he may completely cease holding regular press conferences.

Powell, in 2019—less than a year into his tenure, began holding press conferences after each meeting. In announcing this move, Powell said he wanted to "summarize the economic situation in plain language" because monetary policy affects everyone. When testifying before the Senate Banking Committee last week, Warsh hinted he might stop holding press conferences. When asked if he would insist on holding eight press conferences, Warsh said, "When you hold a press conference, there's got to be some important news to impart."

Deutsche Bank's chief US economist, Matt Luzzetti, doubts Warsh will end the arrangement of holding a press conference after each meeting. In a note to clients, he said, "The press conference provides him a powerful and frequent platform to immediately put his personal stamp on Fed messaging following each policy decision and shape the narrative. Giving up this stage would be a missed opportunity." At this week's meeting, the Fed is almost certain not to make any rate adjustments.
