According to Data Beating monitoring, Musk announced that xAI's programming tool Grok Build will release its Beta version next week, offering both an app and a terminal interface. This is the first time Grok Build has received a specific launch timing.
Grok Build is positioned against Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. Previous disassembly of the platform's code revealed that this tool can be run locally via the command line or operated remotely through a web interface. One distinguishing feature from its competitors is the Model Arena mode, where multiple AI agents work on the same programming task simultaneously, allowing users to compare the results and choose the best solution. In terms of pricing, xAI is establishing a points-based system, where subscribed users receive a fixed monthly quota and can make additional purchases as needed, following a similar model to Claude Code and Codex.
However, Musk himself acknowledges the gap. On April 12th, he stated on X that Grok's programming capability "will only approach Opus 4.6 in May and may catch up with or even surpass it in June," adding that "it's a short time by normal standards, but quite long in the field of AI." Opus 4.6 is currently Anthropic's strongest Claude model.
The Beta version next week is highly likely not to be the strongest in its category in terms of programming capability. Still, xAI is eager to secure a position in the AI programming tool market by first establishing its product form and commercial infrastructure.
