US-Iran Negotiation Ceasefire is About to Expire, Second Round of Face-to-Face Talks Looming

BlockBeats News, April 14th. According to Bloomberg, insiders revealed that the U.S. and Iran are in discussions to hold a new round of face-to-face talks, aiming to reach a longer-term ceasefire arrangement before the two-week ceasefire announced on April 7th expires. The most likely scenario currently is a return to Islamabad, Pakistan for the second round of talks, with Turkey and Egypt also being alternative locations. According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti citing The Atlantic, the next round of direct talks may take place on the 16th.

U.S. Vice President Pence, who chaired the first round of talks in Islamabad last weekend, failed to make a breakthrough. Both the U.S. and Iran blamed each other for the breakdown of the negotiations—the U.S. accusing Iran of refusing to abandon its nuclear ambitions, while Iran claimed the U.S. made "excessive demands." However, both sides did not close the door to further discussions: Iran's Foreign Ministry stated that the differences cannot be resolved in one round, while Pence told Fox News that negotiations had made "significant progress" and said the "ball is in Tehran's court." He also warned that if Iran does not make progress on opening the Strait of Hormuz, the negotiation situation will change.

Trump's statement was more assertive. He said at the White House, "This morning, the right person called us, they want to make a deal." Although he did not disclose the identity of the caller, he clearly expressed openness to further dialogue while continuing to advance the maritime blockade of the Hormuz Strait to maintain pressure on Iran.

Of note, Trump had rare praise on social media last Sunday for the U.S. envoy to the Iranian side, describing them as "very friendly and respectful," seen by the outside world as a positive signal. Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif also stated that all parties are working to facilitate a resolution of the pending issues between the U.S. and Iran.
