Chainalysis: Paying Ransoms with Cryptocurrency May Lead to Sanctions

BlockBeats News, April 11, Chainalysis Senior Intelligence Analyst Kaitlin Martin stated that shipping companies using cryptocurrency for payment of transit fees to Iran may face significant sanctions risk. Under current sanctions frameworks, any payment made to the Iranian regime, including payments related to passage through key waterways, could be interpreted as "material support," exposing the companies to the risk of violating U.S. and international restrictions.

Previous reports suggested that Iran may be looking to collect transit fees in the form of cryptocurrency. While not officially confirmed, U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he would not tolerate any attempt by Tehran to charge passage fees for vessels passing through this critical waterway.
