According to 1M AI News's monitoring, OpenAI's AGI Deployment Division CEO Fidji Simo announced that her condition of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) has worsened, and she will take a few weeks off for new treatment. In an internal memo, she wrote, "I have repeatedly postponed medical checks and new therapies, just to fully focus on work, not missing a day, and now it seems that I have indeed pushed myself too far." This is her first time taking leave since joining OpenAI in August last year. During her sick leave, co-founder and president Greg Brockman took over product responsibilities, while CSO Jason Kwon, CFO Sarah Friar, and CRO Denise Dresser jointly took charge of daily operations.
On the same day, COO Brad Lightcap officially transitioned to no longer oversee daily operations, but instead focus on special projects, with a primary task of advancing OpenAI's collaboration with private equity firms and selling AI tools to their portfolio companies, reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman. OpenAI stated that there are currently no plans to appoint a new COO, and Lightcap's former business duties were taken over by former Slack CEO Dresser. CMO Kate Rouch resigned due to cancer and plans to return with reduced responsibilities after recovery; Gary Briggs, former Meta CMO and OpenAI's marketing advisor for the past year, will temporarily oversee marketing until a successor is found.
The three changes were announced on the same day, a sensitive timing. Just this week, OpenAI, with a valuation of $85.2 billion, completed a $12.2 billion financing round. Altman had previously indicated internally that Simo would host the earnings call after OpenAI's IPO. Simo, who has been in the role for eight months, has been a key driver of OpenAI's product integration, leading initiatives from shutting down Sora to integrating ChatGPT and Codex to create a "super app." Her short-term absence, combined with the COO position being vacant, has added uncertainty to the narrative of executive stability during the IPO window.
