According to 1M AI News's monitoring, Bret Taylor, Chairman of the Board of the OpenAI Foundation, a non-profit organization under OpenAI, published a post announcing the foundation's latest developments. It was revealed that over the next year, the foundation will invest at least $1 billion, covering four main areas: life sciences, employment and economic impact, AI safety resilience, and community projects. This expenditure is part of the previously announced $25 billion total commitment.
In the field of life sciences, the foundation will collaborate with research institutions to utilize AI to tackle Alzheimer's disease through disease pathway mapping, biomarker detection, and personalized therapy. Additionally, they will create an open medical dataset and organize workshops where AI researchers collaborate with disease experts in areas with long-standing funding shortages and high mortality rates. Jacob Trefethen is in charge of this area, having previously managed over $500 million in grants at the philanthropic advisory firm Coefficient Giving.
The AI safety resilience area is led by OpenAI co-founder Wojciech Zaremba, focusing on three areas: research on the impact of AI on children and teenagers and the development of safety measures, detection and defense against biosecurity threats, and support for independent AI model security testing and industry standard development.
In terms of personnel, the foundation also announced several appointments: Robert Kaiden as CFO, previously holding executive positions at Deloitte, Twitter, and the travel company Inspirato; Anna Makanju will join in mid-April as the head of AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy, previously serving as OpenAI's Vice President of Global Impact; and Jeff Arnold as COO, who is an early member of OpenAI. The foundation is currently recruiting an Executive Director.
In October of last year, OpenAI announced its restructuring from a nonprofit organization to a public benefit corporation. The original nonprofit entity, under the name of the OpenAI Foundation, retains control and financial ownership of the company. This large-scale expenditure plan is the foundation's first significant move following the restructuring.
