Ethereum Foundation Outlines L2 Role Evolution: From "Scalability Tool" to "Differentiation Engine"

BlockBeats News, March 24th: Today, the Ethereum Foundation released a systematic exposition on the evolution of the roles of L1 and L2. The key point is that as the ecosystem matures, the primary goal of L2 has shifted from "scaling Ethereum" to "providing differentiated functionality, customized services, and self-sovereign domains," with scalability taking a back seat.

The Foundation has redefined the roles of L1 and L2 as follows:

· L1: Serving as a permissionless, highly resilient global settlement layer, undertaking the functions of shared state, liquidity, and DeFi hub, it needs to continue to scale while maintaining censorship resistance, openness, privacy, and security.

· L2: While developing its own on-chain economy, extending Ethereum's core attributes to a broader user base to form a "full-spectrum" ecosystem.

The Foundation made it clear that L2 with the highest level of integration with L1 should pursue synchronous composability, full interoperability, shared liquidity, and mechanisms like Stage 2. Many L2 solutions with diverse business models and technical expertise will continue to play crucial roles by providing functionalities that L1 lacks.

The Ethereum Foundation stated that it will continue to invest in technology to help L2 smoothly extend the core attributes of L1 and securely access cross-layer liquidity, while emphasizing the transparency and verifiability of the security attributes of L2.
