CFTC Chair: Arizona Lawsuit Against Kalshi Essentially a Jurisdictional Dispute, Escalation to Criminal Prosecution Entirely Inappropriate

BlockBeats News, March 18th, Mike Selig, Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), stated that the Attorney General of Arizona has brought criminal charges related to a prediction market against a trading platform that is already registered with the CFTC (referring to Kalshi). This move is essentially a jurisdictional dispute and elevating it to a criminal litigation is "wholly inappropriate," according to Selig. The CFTC is closely monitoring the progress of this event and assessing the response measures that can be taken.

Earlier today, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes brought criminal charges against the prediction market platform Kalshi, accusing it of providing illegal betting services within the state, including allowing users to place bets on sports events and election results. Mayes stated in a release that although Kalshi positions itself as a "prediction market," it is effectively operating an illegal gambling business and allowing users to bet on Arizona elections, violating local laws. "No company can unilaterally decide which laws to follow."
