OpenAI, Baidu, and Tencent Cloud Join OpenClaw Sponsorship List, Path Founder Dave Morin Named Foundation's First Director

According to 1M AI News, the GitHub Sponsors page of the open-source AI agent framework OpenClaw shows that OpenAI and Baidu are featured sponsors, with Tencent Light Cloud also appearing in the list of 144 active sponsors. The project also has 65 historical sponsors.

Baidu's Open Source Office officially announced sponsorship of OpenClaw on GitHub on March 13, becoming the first large Chinese tech company to support the project through the GitHub Sponsors program. Baidu also plans to integrate its PaddleOCR document parsing capability into the OpenClaw ecosystem as a skill. Tencent Light Cloud followed suit and joined the sponsors on March 15. Previously, tensions arose between the two parties due to Tencent SkillHub's controversial forking, but founder Peter Steinberger praised a "love a good redemption arc" when sharing the sponsorship message on Discord. OpenAI's sponsorship coincided with Steinberger's joining of OpenAI in February, and as the OpenClaw project transitions to an independent foundation, OpenAI will continue to provide funding.

The list of individual sponsors includes some well-known figures. Path social app founder, former Facebook executive, and Slow Ventures founder Dave Morin has become the first board member of the OpenClaw Foundation, having previously co-hosted the February ClawCon event. OpenAI's Developer Experience Lead Romain Huet also appears as a personal sponsor on the list, having interviewed Steinberger on the Builders Unscripted podcast.

The sponsorship page clearly states that founder Peter Steinberger does not retain any sponsorship funds, with 100% reinvested in the community to reward code contributions and bug fixes, as well as to support upstream open-source projects the project depends on. Sponsorship levels range from $5 per month (Krill) to $500 per month (Poseidon), totaling 8 tiers.
