Codex hit rate limit, Engineering Lead: "You know the drill"

According to 1M AI News, OpenAI's AI programming tool Codex has once again experienced issues where some users did not receive responses to their requests. Codex's Engineering Lead Thibault Sottiaux confirmed the issue was resolved on X and stabilized a few hours later. He announced that all user rate limits would be reset, stating, "You have come to expect it, but yes, that means we will be resetting rate limits in a bit. Enjoy."

This has become a common practice for the Codex team. OpenAI's official status page has shown multiple recent incidents of service disruption with Codex, including "Codex Unresponsive," "Codex Abnormally High Usage," and "Codex Cloud Error Rate Increase." After each incident, the team resets users' rate limit quotas as a compensation. For a product with 2 million weekly active users and a 25% weekly growth rate, responding to failures during rapid expansion by frequently resetting rate limits as a blanket action is a costly but effective strategy to quickly appease users.
