Large Number of OpenAI Users Defect to Anthropic, the Latter Tops US App Download Chart

BlockBeats News, March 3rd, Anthropic was disabled by the U.S. government for refusing Pentagon's requests for "autonomous lethal weapons" and "mass surveillance" using its artificial intelligence technology products, while OpenAI swiftly reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy OpenAI models in the Defense Department's classified network. This event triggered backlash from OpenAI users and sparked a boycott movement, with 700,000 people unsubscribing, even uninstalling ChatGPT, and switching to Claude under Anthropic in a short period of time.

Anthropic, supported by a large number of users, saw Claude, its product, rise to the top of the free download list in the U.S. APP Store, with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini ranking second and third, respectively. The increased failure rate of Claude was previously related to a significant increase in traffic.

Previously reported, global tech and cultural celebrities including Scarlett Johansson, Musk, and Oscar-winning actress Kate Blanchett announced a boycott of OpenAI. Hundreds of Google and OpenAI employees even spontaneously signed a petition to support Anthropic's set bottom line for Pentagon's use of AI.
