France has announced an increase in its nuclear arsenal to reshape European nuclear deterrence.

BlockBeats News, March 2nd, French President Macron stated that due to the wavering of the U.S. security commitment to the European continent, France will increase its nuclear warhead count to strengthen Europe's atomic deterrence.

He added that the U.S. will play a key role in European defense, but warned that recent remarks from Washington suggest Europe needs to take on a greater role in its own defense.

As the leader of the only EU country with nuclear weapons, Macron faces growing questions about whether he will extend France's atomic defense umbrella to the entire European continent.

According to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, France currently has a nuclear warhead stockpile of 290, roughly on par with 1984 levels. France's nuclear arsenal peaked in the early 1990s, with as many as 540 warheads. These warheads are deployed on air-drop weapons and M51 submarine-launched ballistic missiles. (Jinse)
