Korean Prosecutors Recover 320.8 Stolen BTC, Hacker's Identity Still Unknown

2026-02-19 10:38

BlockBeats News, February 19th, according to The Block, the South Korean prosecutor has recovered about $21.4 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC) stolen from its custody last year.

Last December, the South Korean prosecutor discovered that the Bitcoin they had seized in a previous raid on a gambling platform had disappeared. An internal investigation revealed that in August of last year, investigators accidentally accessed a phishing website and entered a recovery seed phrase, allowing the hacker to steal the Bitcoin.

The hacker has now returned 320.8 BTC to a wallet controlled by South Korean law enforcement on Tuesday. The prosecutor stated that they had previously blocked the hacker's wallet on centralized exchanges to prevent the Bitcoin from being cashed out. The hacker's identity has not yet been determined. The prosecutor has transferred the returned Bitcoin to a local exchange for safekeeping and will continue to investigate the hacker's identity.
