The U.S. Senate Once Again "Deadlocked," Government Shutdown Risk Soars

2026-01-30 13:58

BlockBeats News, January 30th, the US Senate faced a new obstacle in the negotiations on a government funding bill, leading to a significantly increased risk of a partial government shutdown on Saturday, the passage of this bill could have ensured uninterrupted operational funding for various government agencies.

Senate Democrats had reached an agreement with US President Trump earlier, under which Congress could pass a spending bill covering various areas of government operations, including defense, healthcare projects, etc., while both sides would negotiate the new restrictive measures of the Trump administration's immigration policy. However, on Thursday evening Eastern Time, the Senate's relevant legislative action stalled due to some members' opposition to this agreement.

The Senate is scheduled to reconvene at 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday (midnight Beijing Time on Saturday), with the current government funding authorization set to expire at midnight. Even if the Senate approves the agreement, the bill will still need approval from the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, which will be adjourned until February 2nd. House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Thursday evening Eastern Time that it would be extremely difficult to get the members back to Washington to vote before the midnight deadline.

As of the time of writing, the probability of a US government shutdown on Saturday on Polymarket has risen to 69%.
