Australia Lists Cryptocurrency Regulatory Gap as Key Risk for 2026

BlockBeats News, January 27th. According to Decrypt, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has released a "Key Risks Outlook," identifying the regulatory gap in cryptocurrency as a significant risk for 2026. The Australian government is advancing the "Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Bill 2025," which would require cryptocurrency exchanges and custody platforms to hold an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL).

ASIC Chair Joe Longo stated that some businesses are deliberately circumventing existing regulations, exacerbating regulatory uncertainty. Industry experts are calling for clear boundary definitions for licensing and an expansion of regulatory sandbox scope to balance innovation and consumer protection. According to the Australian government's estimates, a robust digital asset regulatory framework could potentially bring a $24 billion productivity boost to Australia annually.
