Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives: House Will Still "Greenlight" Trump's Global Tariff Plan

2025-04-08 07:11

BlockBeats News, April 8th, according to the U.S. media Politico, House Speaker Johnson said on Monday that even as some Republican lawmakers publicly pleaded with Trump to negotiate a way out of the tariffs set to take effect on Wednesday, the House would still provide "space" for Trump to implement his broad global tariff regime.

Johnson said, "We will give him the space that he needs for policy implementation, and then we'll see how things develop." The Speaker went on to say that Trump is "actively engaged and trying to address" the trade deficit issue. Opposition within the Republican Party has taken the form of bipartisan legislation aimed at reclaiming Congress's authority over tariffs from the President.

Previously, Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell and Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa proposed legislation to restrict the President's unilateral tariff powers. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) plans to introduce the House version of the legislation on Monday. Johnson refused to commit publicly on Monday to bringing the revised Senate budget plan to the House for a vote this week, in the face of strong opposition from a group of fiscal conservatives. However, some senior Republican aides indicated that the current plan remains for a final vote on Wednesday afternoon as scheduled.
