Analysis: Factors such as Clemency Petition Backlog make it highly unlikely for SBF to receive clemency

BlockBeats News, February 18. According to Cointelegraph, with the election of Trump as U.S. President, an increasing number of white-collar criminals, including SBF, have begun to explore pathways to pardon. However, as the backlog of pardon cases continues to grow, opportunities for conviction relief remain minimal, according to William Livolsi, Executive Director of the national U.S. support organization White Collar Support Group, which advocates for a more equitable post-conviction policy.

President Trump fulfilled a campaign promise by pardoning Silk Road's Ross Ulbricht, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison plus two life sentences for creating and operating the Silk Road dark web marketplace. For Bitcoin enthusiasts, Ulbricht's 2015 conviction was seen as overly harsh.

Shortly after Ulbricht's pardon, reports indicate that SBF's parents are exploring the possibility of seeking a presidential pardon for their son. SBF was sentenced to 25 years in prison following the collapse of his crypto empire.

However, William Livolsi stated: "The comparison between Ulbricht and SBF is not entirely straightforward. While they are indeed both high-profile figures in the crypto space, their cases and sentenced periods are very different. Additionally, Ulbricht's pardon is directly linked to a campaign promise made by President Trump to his political supporters."

"In the end, no one really knows which factors might influence the pardon decision," he said.

The Pardon Attorney's Office has established a formal pardon application process, which starts with the submission of a pardon petition and ends with a formal recommendation by the pardon attorney. Subsequently, it is up to the U.S. President to make the final determination for each case. The Pardon Attorney's Office currently has a backlog of approximately 10,000 petitions.
