BlockBeats News, December 21st, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin posted on social media, saying, "My definition of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is:
AGI is an AI powerful enough that if one day all humans suddenly disappeared and this AI was uploaded into a robot body, it would be able to independently carry on civilization.
Obviously, this is a very hard-to-measure definition, but I think it captures the core intuitive distinction that many have in their heads between the 'AI we are accustomed to' and AGI. It marks the transition from a tool that is constantly reliant on human input to a self-sustaining life form.
ASI (Artificial Superintelligence) is a whole another story—my definition is that point at which humans no longer add value to productivity (as we've sort of reached in board games over the past decade.)
Yes, ASI scares me—indeed, even the AGI I defined scares me because of the clear danger of it running out of control. I support us focusing our work on building intelligence enhancement tools for humans rather than creating superintelligent life forms."
