BlockBeats news, August 26, Richmond Fed President Barkin said in recent comments that the "low hiring, low firing" employment decision-making approach currently adopted by US companies is unlikely to continue, and he pointed out that if the economy weakens, companies may lay off employees.
While companies have become more conservative in filling positions, this has not yet occurred because companies are still reluctant to lay off employees.
Balkin said he is taking a "trial and error" approach to interest rate cuts, indicating that he may support a 25 basis point rate cut, rather than the 50 basis point cut that some analysts believe. He pointed out that the inflation rate is still half a percentage point higher than the Fed's 2% target, and that rate cuts may eventually fuel inflation by boosting demand for housing and other items.
