China's Jiangxi court sentenced four people for using "film props coins" to buy virtual currency fraud

BlockBeats news, on August 22, according to China Chang'an Net, the People's Court of Le'an County, Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, recently sentenced a case in the county in which "film and television props coins" were used to purchase virtual currency. Four defendants were sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of 1 year and 9 months to 2 years and 2 months for fraud.

In 2023, Mr. Yang, a resident of Le'an County, and a man nicknamed "Fatty" conducted two offline transactions of "Tether" (virtual currency) and won Mr. Yang's trust. In 2024, "Fatty" again said that he would spend 50,000 yuan to buy "Tether" from Mr. Yang. When the transaction was completed, it was late and the lights were dim. "Fatty" interrupted Mr. Yang several times to check the cash for the transaction, and quickly drove away on an electric bicycle after the transaction was completed. When Mr. Yang checked, he found that only a few of the face of each stack of money were real money. The rest of the cash for the transaction was printed with the words "Film and Television Prop Coin".

On January 30, the police from the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the Public Security Bureau of Le'an County arrested the suspects Huang and Yi (the entourage who fled with "Fatty" at the time of the incident) in a hotel in Shangli County. On February 6, the police arrested the suspect Xie (also known as "Fatty") in a rental house in Shangli County.

After interrogation by the police, it was learned that the organizational structure of the gang was consistent with the police's previous inference. The leaders were the suspect Huang and Li, who was on the run at the time. Huang and Li were responsible for finding the targets of fraud and "setting up a trap" throughout the transaction process to lure the other party into being deceived. At the same time, Huang determined that the public security organs would not accept cases involving virtual currency transactions, and used this to instigate the suspect Xie to act as a "pawn", while Yi was responsible for "cooperating" with Xie to ensure that Xie escaped quickly and defrauded the victim.

In order to bring all the suspects to justice, the police further analyzed the information provided by Huang, Yi and Xie and found that Li had fled to Guizhou Province. On February 17, the police went to Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province and brought the last suspect, Li, to justice.

Finally, the People's Court of Le'an County adopted the charges brought by the People's Procuratorate of Le'an County. On July 25, the court sentenced the four defendants to fixed-term imprisonment ranging from 1 year and 9 months to 2 years and 2 months, and imposed fines ranging from 6,000 yuan to 18,000 yuan.

In this regard, the relevant person in charge of the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the Le'an County Public Security Bureau said that this case is one of the typical cases of the bureau's crackdown on new crimes. The public security, procuratorial and judicial departments are based on protecting the lives and property of the people, preventing similar cases from escalating into vicious crimes, and strengthening cooperation, which provides a reference for cracking down on similar new crimes. During the investigation of the case, the police conducted a detailed analysis, which took a month, and they traveled 1,000 kilometers to capture all the suspects, which also laid the foundation for the bureau to investigate such cases in the future.
