Mt.Gox creditors have begun receiving compensation payments denominated in Japanese yen.

According to a BlockBeats report on December 26th citing Cointelegraph, creditors of Mt. Gox have started to receive compensation payments from the long-defunct Bitcoin exchange platform. These compensations are cash refunds for the Bitcoins that have been locked on the trading platform since February 2014. Multiple posts on the Reddit page r/mtgoxinsolvency show that Mt. Gox is sending refunds priced in Japanese yen to users through PayPal, almost a decade after the funds were locked on the platform. Reddit user Free-end254 claimed, "I just got paid," and attached an email screenshot containing a PayPal receipt. Another Reddit user wrote, "I just received the money!" They initially thought the email was some sort of phishing scam, but later confirmed that they had indeed received an actual payment in their PayPal account. The latest compensation from Mt. Gox first appeared on December 21st, when an anonymous Japanese X (formerly Twitter) user claimed to have received Mt. Gox's compensation through a bank transfer, with the amount credited in Japanese yen. This news comes a month after Nobuaki Kobayashi, the trustee of the Mt. Gox Bitcoin exchange, began sending emails to rehabilitation creditors about the start of compensation payments on November 21st. Kobayashi's email stated that cash compensation payments would be made to creditors from 2023 and are expected to continue in 2024. Kobayashi did not provide a specific timeline for individual rehabilitation creditors to receive compensation payments.
