Analysis: The US SEC's approval of an Ethereum futures ETF may imply that it views Ethereum as a commodity.
According to a report by Coin Edition on December 19th, James Seyffart, an ETF analyst at Bloomberg, hinted on the Unchained podcast that the US SEC may be changing its stance on Ethereum. Seyffart pointed out that the recently approved Ethereum futures ETF by the SEC suggests that the SEC may subtly recognize Ethereum as a commodity rather than a security.
He emphasized that if the SEC changes its stance and classifies Ethereum as a security, it would have a significant impact and could result in the delisting of Ethereum futures contracts and ETFs.
Seyffart suggested that there is a high probability of Ethereum being classified as a commodity, which he estimates could happen in 2024. In addition, Seyffart pointed out that SEC Chairman Gary Gensler recognizes Bitcoin as a commodity and has remained relatively silent on Ethereum, indirectly implying that he no longer considers it a security. Seyffart suggested that the SEC may choose not to waste time and energy on a prolonged struggle over Ethereum's classification issue.
