Bittrex files for bankruptcy protection in Delaware, USA, but international operations remain unaffected.
BlockBeats reported on May 9th that cryptocurrency exchange Bittrex filed for bankruptcy in Delaware, USA on Monday, less than a month after the US Securities and Exchange Commission accused it of operating an unregistered trading platform. According to court documents, the company is estimated to have assets and liabilities of between $500 million and $1 billion, with over 100,000 creditors. Two other entities, Bittrex Malta Ltd. and Bittrex Malta Holdings Ltd., have also filed for bankruptcy protection in Delaware.
According to a spokesperson for Bittrex Inc., the filing for bankruptcy protection will not affect Bittrex Global. "After announcing that Bittrex, Inc. will cease all operations in the US from April 30th, we have now decided to file for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code in the Federal Court of Delaware," the spokesperson said. "This statement will not affect Bittrex Global, which will continue to operate normally for its customers outside the US. For customers who have not withdrawn funds from the platform before the end of April, your funds are still safe and secure, and our top priority is to ensure the integrity of our customers' funds."
